A Brief History
Chapmans Shoes was founded when a boot-makers shop was set up in Oxford Street London in 1849. In 1855 the shop was moved to Camberley, Surrey to serve the officers of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. A second shop was opened in Bagshot in the 1880's where one of the customers was the then resident of Bagshot Park, the Duke of Connaught.
The boot-makers business expanded after the second world war into a small chain of shoe shops throughout Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, at various times operating in Guildford, Wallington Sunningdale, Alton, Wokingham, Little Hampton, Woking, Basingstoke and Reading, as well as Bagshot and Camberley.
The company's business has been built on the provision of wider fitting shoes for men and women, promoting comfort as well as fashion, and on a personal service.
In 2014 the company re-opened ,after 10 years, at new premises in The Harris Arcade, Reading.
